day 48

If you take your neighbor's cloak in pawn, you shall restore it before the sun goes down; for it may be your neighbor's only clothing to use as cover; in what else shall that person sleep?  And if your neighbor cries out to me, I will listen, for I am compassionate.  Exodus 22:26-27

compassion:

the coat gathering
dust in the closet,
      warming a refugee;
the staples sitting
on the pantry shelf
for the meal no longer
on the menu,
      feeding folks at a shelter;
the arm which could
push away the bullied teenager,
      reaching out to draw
      him into comfort;
the ear tuned to the
latest reality show,
      listening to the
      grief of a widow.
