sinking

“Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.’  Matthew 14:28

if it is you (we proclaim

loud enough so all can hear),

call us to end injustice,

to wipe out poverty,

to offer compassion to all,

to create peace rather than war,

but

when you say, “okay, have at it,”

our knees begin to knock

our feet begin to shuffle,

our hands begin to sweat, and we

sink beneath the waves

of our bravado
