knees scrunched tight

under the desks, we

lick the tip of our pencils

and begin to carefully

copy into our notebook

what the teacher is writing

on the chalkboard, making

sure every fabrication and

foolish statement is letter-perfect,

while you are outside,

turning cartwheels with

justice and grace, hoping

we will look up, notice,

and slip out the door to join you

before the final bell rings.
