we keep shortening the table
and putting chairs out by the curb,
and you stay up all night
in your workshop building
extensions and more chairs.
we keep thinking we have
to put up more walls
to keep "those people" out
and you walk behind us
pulling out the blocks
to build bridges of hope.
we draw the curtains
across our double-bolted
doors and windows, and
you sit out on the front porch
holding a candle, waiting
and watching for all the
wastrels to find our way
home.
