when you could oppress us
you choose to grace us
with your justice and hope.
when you could be consumed
with red-hot out-of-control anger,
you breathe the cool gentleness
of forgiveness into our souls.
when you could turn your back
on us and walk away, your run
toward us to sweep us up in your arms,
may we pay more attention
to what you actually do, our God,
than keep expecting you
to behave as we do.
