school crossing guard
huddling against the wind;
the
car wash attendants
transferring winter’s grime
from our cars to their bodies;
the
ice-encrusted firefighter
trying to catch her breath
before entering the building;
the
school bus starters
and warmer-uppers out
before dawn crawls out of bed;
God,
protect those
who
are already at work
while
we rack our brains
for
excuses to stay home.
