the day after

we could
put the photos
   back in the album,
store the quotes
   on a thumb drive,
shove the memories
   to the back of the closet,
            or we can
make compassion
   more than a meme,
fight injustice
   on more than a holiday,
see a prophet
   as more than a platitude,
treat a dream
   as more than
   a historic artifact.
