as we pass you
on the beach, we
start sniggering at the
95-pound weakling who
can’t string two words together
or look anyone in the eye, not
noticing that you are the one
teaching little children the words
to every song about grace,
running into the surf
to rescue us from our foibles,
lifting us to our feet when
we slip on the banana peels
life tosses in front of us
