"Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him." Genesis 6:22

in the simple kindness
of dropping off food and
supplies to the local
animal shelter,
in the gift of the time
to foster a cat until
it finds its forever home,
in the patience and love
of training a dog
to become a companion
to a person who needs one
or a therapy dog visiting
kids in hospital rooms and
older folks in care,
may we help build
the ark creation needs
in our moments.

"Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin."  Psalm 51:2

like little kids
who play innocent
about the mud
up to their knees
and the muck that
is matting their hair,
we squirm and mutter,
we go as limp as rags
as you gently pull off
all the foolishness we wear
and pick us up and put
us into that great big tub
filled with warm waters of life
and bubbling with grace,
and then you dry us off
and wrap us in the soft
robe of new life and hope,
carrying us to bed as
we fall asleep in your
love

"For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him."  Psalm 62:5

even if it is only me,
i will wait in silence
to hear your whispers
of love over the shouts of hate.
even if i walk alone,
i will continue to hope
that justice will finish
it's journey to the forgotten.
even if everyone laughs,
i will keep hoping that
peace can mend every
broken relationship.
even if no one else cares,
i believe that hope
is the greatest gift
we can share with others.

"'If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.'" Genesis 4:7

despite all the warnings,
we just cannot help
posting about turning our
bookface blue, or
answering the call that
says 'suspected spam,'
or clicking on that link
demanding we send cash
for that missed tax payment,
that grandchild being held
in jail needing bail money,
that 'game' offering to show

if you were a Martian . . .

and this is all before

"My soul thirsts for God,
    for the living God.
When shall I come and behold
the face of God?"  Psalm 42:2

in the barista

and adds a simple 'live in hope.'
in the little kid
who sits behind

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

a Word was uttered
and suddenly light and wonder,
vibrant butterflies and creepy crawlies,
lowing cattle and stubborn donkeys,
whitewater rapids and calm ponds
sprang forth in the emptiness of chaos.
a Word gave its first cry of life
and suddenly angels sang
and shepherds stammered the news,
cattle lowed and donkeys brayed,
a star blazed in the sky and the wise
became foolish enough to follow it,
a father looked helpless and
a mother nursed her beloved
in the emptiness of a guest room.
a Word was whispered and
grief was wrapped in the warm
swaddling clothes of hope,
loneliness was invited into
the hearts of next door neighbors,
justice took root in the neglected
hearts and souls of the vulnerable,
grace became a river on which
we could float away from
the emptiness of our lives.

Baptism of the Lord

"Then God said, 'Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness;'" Genesis 1:26a

vision to search out
the furthest galaxies
and to catch a glimpse
of a widow weeping
on her front porch,
hearing to listen to
the cries of the forgotten
and to hearken to that
still small voice in our soul,
hands to reach down
and lift the fallen, as well
as to be grabbed by a
teetering toddler,
feet to run towards those
who are losing their
tenuous grip on hope
and to walk quietly in
the corridors of hospice,
hearts to open wide
to welcome the strangers
and to break in grief
with our closest friends,
souls to know the gentle
touch of wisdom from a
person slipping into dementia
and to be healed by
the butterfly kisses of little kids,

these are the pieces of you
planted deep within each of us,
by your grace, Imaginative God.

Eve of the Baptism of the Lord

"Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water." Psalm 114:7-8

parched
our hearts become deserts
our souls turning to dust,
we stand at the very
edge of our worst fears
that if we dare to take
that simple, small step
God only knows what
will happen . . .
. . . never noticing that
you gathered up all the tears
which have flowed from us,
and poured them into that
pool of gentle hope, where
you stand just waiting
to take us by the hand
to pour the waters of grace
over us, as you whisper,
'welcome, my Beloved,
welcome.'

"Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you." Isaiah 60:1

get up off your apathy
and follow the Star shining
over the lonely, the vulnerable,
the hungry, the hurting, and
bring the gifts of medicine,
hope, food for body and spirit,
a welcome at your table and
a place in your heart.
be the candle in the window
lighting the way for
all the kids who know only
rejection and neglect,
abuse and abject fear,
so they may find a family
which accepts them for
who they are and loves them
without any reservations.
and let people see God's glory.
not in your privilege and pretensions
but in your weakness and caring,
not in your power and portfolio
but in your generous soul.

they are a dry wall

"Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you." Ephesians 4:31-32

in these times,
when we find it easier
to offer bitter bile
than kind words,
snarky responses
over tender whispers,
angry taunts as opposed
to gracious comments,
grudge laced grumbles
instead of grace's affirmations,
we show how we choose
to put away those around us
rather than drawing them
into love's embrace.

"I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all." Ephesians 4:1-6

we take delight
in pointing out all
the deficiencies of folks
who worship in different
ways than we do,
we feel exquisite contentment
in the millions of little slights
we can inflict on people who
tumble off the pedestals
others have put them on,
we turn snark into a snack
to nibble on as we follow
those on social media, just
waiting to point out the
failures of their theology

and then wonder
why people want nothing
to do with folks who
show clearly that being
in community with God's
children has absolutely
nothing
to do with their faith.

for them or those to poor
to bear all the costs.
may this be the year

but could we clarify
exactly what being

is there an NDA which
protects us from that
chronic guilt from being
thrown up in our faces?
are those grudges which
scrape the grace off our hearts
really tossed into that
crystal sea of forgiveness?
and how do i handle that

"He will regard the prayer of the destitute

wondering if we might

as they pull into the parking

junker, we switch out the lights,
turn off our hearts and
hope they won't be too
persistent in ringing the doorbell.

as they sit down on the
bench next to us, mumbling
the same words over and
over again, and emitting a
smell that overwhelms us,
we suddenly remember an
important chore waiting
for us at home,

never noticing you taking
our place next to them and
acting as if you had all
the time in the world for
only them.

tight around us so, together,
we can knit them into
warm shawls of remembrance.
you came,
so that when death slowly
tries to squeeze us into
fearful submission, you
rub grace all over us, so

in the stillness of the
first snowfall blanketing
our homes and yards
may we listen to the sobs
of creation which is being
damaged by our foolishness,
in the silence of our apathy
to the hatred and cruelty
which spreads like wildfires
across so many places
may we not fail to notice
you choosing to once more,
once again, (however many
times it takes for us
to finally be transformed)
come to us in

who becomes a refugee
fleeing for your life
carrying only that weakness
which will shatter the powers

will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph."  Amos 5:15

why do we find it
so easy to execrate
our rivals in sports but
seem to be willing to let
evil get more than a second chance?
why do we believe justice
belongs in gated communities
but not in neighborhoods
defeated by blight and filled
with the rubble of disappointment?
why do we see our selves
as being part of your
Beloved Community, but
would exclude the remnant
called vulnerable and forgotten?

First Thursday of Advent

"The cords of death encompassed me;
    the torrents of perdition assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me."  Psalm 18:4-5

you gently wash away
the vernix caseosa of
pandemonium off of us
using the warm waters of life,
you swaddle us in
the warm blankets woven
from the strands of grace and love,
you hold us in your arms
so we can feel your warm
breath upon us, and then
you place us in that cradle
crafted from the pieces
of a discarded cross.

First Wednesday of Advent

"God looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God." Psalm 53:2

may we be wise enough
to see the hints of justice
in those who are demanding
leaders build more shelters
and affordable housing,
to hear the whispers of grace
in the conversations between
the residents and the students
who discover their class project
to be more than just education.
to embrace the strangers
who have just started attending
our services and programs
as if they are long lost friends.

First Tuesday of Advent

"Therefore I intend to keep on reminding you of these things . . ."  2nd Peter 1:12

when we forget the names
of our best friends, you look
at the palms of your hands
where they are engraved, so
you can whisper them to us.
as we struggle in the
misty past hoping to find
our way back to today,
you gently hold our hand
so we know we are
heading in the right direction.
should the day come when
we start repeating ourselves,
saying the same things and
asking the same questions
over and over,
may we hear your gentle
voice reminding us that
you are with us.

First Monday of Advent

"I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry." Psalm 40:1

when friends text me,
'hurry up, we have
to get to the sales
before everything is gone!'
may i pour another cup
of tea and pick up my book.
when folks stand by
the side of the road flipping
those big arrows pointing
to the 'fresh' (really, after
being cut down weeks ago?)
Christmas trees in the lot,
may i pull into the park
and take a long walk
with silence as my companion.
when the world pesters me
to try to see as many of the
same plot/town/actors holiday
movies as i can in a single day,
may i run down the street
to make snow angels with
the kids.

First Sunday of Advent

"For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night." 1 Thessalonians 5:2

we have wired the house
so no window can be
can be opened without
alarms going off, and put
security cameras on the
front and back doors to
show us who might be there,
while paying private security
to patrol the neighborhood 24/7.
but you come
as the elderly neighbor
who can't find her way home
after going for a walk,
as the little kids selling
Christmas cards door to door
to get money to buy
their single parents gifts,
as the teenager offering
to shovel our walks
so they can buy a
fast food meal they will
scarf down in the doorway
where they sleep each night.

auld lang syne

"Jesus stood still and called them, saying, 'What do you want me to do for you?' They said to him, 'Lord, let our eyes be opened.'" Matthew 20:32-33

did we notice you
watching us as you
wondered if we might
offer friendship to a stranger
or were we too busy
tiktoking our way through life?
did we offer you
a sideways glance
as you were sliding deeper
into disappointment after disappointment
or can we claim you were
not in our peripheral field?
did we see you waving
a tentative hand like a lonely
teenager hoping that a mate
might come over and chat
or were our eyes to bleary
from binge watching flicks
which net us nothing?

as this year comes to an end,
open our eyes, Watchful God,
open our eyes.

hopeful

"Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;" 1 Peter 3:15b

instead of tossing
it in the attic with the
rest of the stuff we don't
know if we should keep,
let us plant hope like
a beacon in our front yards.
instead of putting it
with the heirlooms in
the safe deposit box
to pass them on to
our kids and grandkids
at some point in the future,
let us offer hope to them now,
so they can grow old together.

true/false

"But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong;'" Matthew 20:13a

but how can you be
right
insisting that latecomers
get the same pay as
the founders of the company,
that outsiders should
be welcomed as kin,
that peacemakers should
be honored with massive,
tickertape parades,
that we should see
little children as our mentors
and not the superstars,
that love is always,
always
to be preferred over hate,

when the world
insists you got everything
wrong?

plaitudes

"I will abundantly bless its provisions;
I will satisfy its poor with bread."  Psalm 132:15

when we think
poverty can be solved
by forming more commissions,
rather than sitting with
and learning from the poor,
when we are convinced
our thoughts and prayers
should fill the emptiness
in the souls of the struggling,
when we believe a few sacks
of almost-expired canned goods
and day-old bread should
take away any hunger pangs
of your children around us,
O God,

well, why are we shocked
that you act as if you
don't know us at all?

because

"'Because the poor are despoiled,
   because the needy groan, I will now rise up,' says the LORD;
'I will place them in the safety for which they long.'”  Psalm 12:5

may we be the
safety net for all
who are tossed aside
by the privileged.
may we be the ears
for those nobody else
cares to hear.
may we be the haven
for all who have lost
their way because we
never were willing to share
the directions to life
with them.

may . . .

"For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall never be shaken."  Psalm 62:1-2

may the waiting
not become so onerous
we simply give up.
may the silence
allow us to hear the
gentle rhythm of love.
may the rock
be wide enough
for more than just one.
may our fort be made
out of pillows and blankets
so no one feels threatened.
may we feel your arms
wrap tight around us
when we tremble with fear,
and may we realize
that your salvation means
we are never left on our own.

welcome mat

"Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." Romans 15:7

stepping over the
rough sleeper on the
sidewalk, we rush
to greet the privileged,
to hold open the doors
for the celebrities, to
offer the best seat
to the powerfully wealthy,
while you bring a meal
to the person we ignored,
you sit with the lonely
on their park benches,
to read to the children
waiting for the doors
to the shelter to open.

grace notes

"The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen." Revelation 22:21

grace gathered the
silence of chaos and
sang creation into life.
grace was in the corner
of the delivery room
crooning lullabies.
grace composed the
carols of joy whenever
we turned cartwheels in life
and chanted in the minor key
when things fell apart.
grace taught us the secret
love songs lodged deep
in the hollows of God's heart,
and grace will sing the
requiem
when we take our last
breath.
