when we think
poverty can be solved
by forming more commissions,
rather than sitting with
and learning from the poor,
when we are convinced
our thoughts and prayers
should fill the emptiness
in the souls of the struggling,
when we believe a few sacks
of almost-expired canned goods
and day-old bread should
take away any hunger pangs
of your children around us,
O God,
well, why are we shocked
that you act as if you
don't know us at all?
