we pass by the
knot of celebrities
and, as they sing
their siren songs, we
turn quickly to listen.
we watch the same ads
from the same politicians
saying the same words
to feed their narcissism,
and we offer them back
so they will not starve.
we slip and fall on
the banana peels the
rich and powerful toss
in front of us, so we will
think they are the only ones
who will ever help us,
and
we wonder why we
cannot find that shelter
of grace, hope, and justice
you talk about constantly.
