when we sit across
the table, mug in hand,
as our friend tells of
their journey from
addiction to recovery,
when we ring the bell
as the medical staff
cheers for us as we
leave the cancer center
for the last time,
when we gather the
kids and grandkids
to tell them the story
of the ancestors who
were here before any
of the outsiders crossed
the seas to settle here,
we find ourselves riding
shotgun as God drives
towards the future
without needing a map,
leaving Egypt fading
behind in the rearview
mirror.
