it seems a simple thing
to expect others to give
away everything they have,
especially since we convince
ourselves that our privilege
really is best known as scarcity.
but if you point out
our political beliefs
our self-righteous indignation
our prejudices we so easily deny
our carry-us-kicking-and-screaming
refusal to think you are talking
about or to us . . .
well, you might force us
to turn our backs on you
even if we tell others we
would never do that!
