the hungry families
throughout the world
are reminded of
our stinginess once more.
the forgotten who had
edged a little closer
to becoming our kin
know again our inhospitality.
the lonely, those working
more than one job,
the veterans needing care,
those who are disabled
line up to bear witness
to our callused souls,
and when they try
to be heard,
they are threatened
with being deported
from our hearts.
