August 20th

"who executes justice for the oppressed;
   who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free;
   the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the strangers;
   he upholds the orphan and the widow,
   but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin." Psalm 146:7-9

certain that compassion
is only found in the stories
of folks set way in the past,
may we see it in the little kids
who surround the new classmate
when the bullies approach.
convinced justice is simply
a volume of dusty history
shelved in the wrong section,
may we open our eyes to its
fresh iteration in the tiny houses
for the homeless popping up everywhere.
convinced that the only way
our kids and grandkids will
know about love is taking them
to the park to some outdoor plays,
may we watch the older woman
kneeling by the wheelchair,
holding her best friend's hand
as they watch fireworks for
what may be the last time ever.
when we think you have put up
the 'closed' sign and shuttered the doors,
remind us that you use action verbs,
not those in the past tense.
